About this book
Naaman's garden in Damascus becomes a meeting place for private ambition and public danger. As an Assyrian army threatens the city, the priest Rezon and Naaman's wife, Tsarpi, discuss how to turn the soldier away from resistance. Their bargain promises wealth and status at the expense of the people he defends. Ruahmah, a captive servant from Israel, overhears their plans and later receives Naaman's protection when other servants mistreat her.
Written as a play in verse, the story places religious authority beside loyalty, compassion and the desire for power. A later scene follows Ruahmah as she leads a party seeking help for the ailing Naaman near Samaria. Her determination meets the soldiers' discouragement and the king of Israel's fear. Detailed stage directions, formal speeches and sharply opposed motives give readers a drama in which faith is tested through decisions made under pressure.
