About this book

A search of a prisoner's cabinet sets the conflict in motion at Fotheringay Castle. Mary's keeper, Sir Amias Paulet, treats jewels and letters as threats to England, while Hannah Kennedy defends her mistress's dignity. Friedrich Schiller's historical tragedy places Mary, Queen of Scots, under the watch of officials whose duties are entangled with suspicion, loyalty and the struggle over royal authority.

The verse dialogue moves from the harsh limits of captivity to the calculations of Elizabeth's court. Leicester urges Elizabeth to arrange an apparently chance encounter with Mary in a park. When Mary reaches the open air, trees and distant clouds briefly restore her sense of freedom, though Kennedy reminds her of the boundaries around them. These shifts between statecraft and personal feeling give readers a way to examine how public power bears on private hopes.

About the author

Friedrich Schiller

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, playwright, and historian, and with Goethe a founder of Weimar classicism. His dramas of freedom and moral struggle, and his Ode to Joy set to music by Beethoven, made him one of the most beloved writers in the German language.
