Heortology by K. A. Heinrich Kellner presents a history of Christian festivals from their origins to the period in which the book was written. The account of the cross's recovery distinguishes the existing feast in the East from the solemn commemoration of the recovery kept in the West. The comparison of service-books records the spring festival of the Holy Cross in ancient Gallic liturgies, where the celebration is called the Finding of the Cross.
The discussion of Catholic festivals in Prussia describes an arrangement under which the Presentation of our Lady in the Temple became a movable feast. The account attributes the greatest alterations to the Church's holy days to the French Revolution.
