About this book
The Church Year and Kalendar discusses the observance of festivals and fasting, including the feast of Corpus Christi and the week before Easter. The account places the first emergence of Corpus Christi in the thirteenth century and says that the feast was not formally enjoined until the fourteenth. The feast of the Conception of St Mary the Virgin is described as apparently originating in the East as a historical commemoration.
The discussion of fasting records that, about the middle of the third century at Alexandria, some observed the whole week before Easter, while others fasted for fewer days. The account notes that some exceptional people did not fast even one day and explicitly states that no fixed rule was yet enforced.
