About this book
The book Some Old Time Beauties is made after portraits by the English masters, with embellishment and comment by Thomson Willing. The contents list, among others, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, with a portrait by Thomas Gainsborough, Emma, Lady Hamilton, with a portrait by George Romney, and Mrs. Sheridan, with a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
The text says the episode of the Duchess's career which is most known is her purchase, by a kiss, of a vote for Fox in an election. The text quotes Wraxall on the Duchess of Devonshire: her beauty lay in the amenity and graces of her deportment and in her irresistible manners. A comparison of painters says Lawrence and Hoppner were to the regency what Reynolds, Gainsborough, and Romney were to the early days of the reign of George III., as painters of the patrician beauties.
