About this book
Hiero answers Simonides that, outside the list of things Simonides has named, he would find it hard to state in what respect the despot can have other channels of perception. The text says that sometimes the mind (or soul) itself is the sole instrument by which pains and pleasures are registered, while at other times they are derived conjointly through both soul and body.
The text asks, of a man who has secretly and silently made away with all such people through terror, whom he has to fall back upon to be of use to him, save only the unjust, the incontinent, and the slavish-natured. On armaments, the text asks whether a greater terror is presented to the foe by bright emlazonrie and horrent arms, or by the warlike aspect of a whole city perfectly equipped. A note on the author says Xenophon the Athenian was born 431 B.C. and was a pupil of Socrates.
