About this book

Hildegarde's Holiday is labelled A Story for Girls on its title page. The chapter list includes Miss Wealthy, The Orchard, The Doctors, On the River, A Story Evening and Flower-Day.

In one scene the old lady Miss Wealthy sits with her knitting, and a carriage arrives. Hildegarde helps her companion Rose down, urging her to lean on her arm and walk slowly, and greets Cousin Wealthy, who says Rose looks much better. Martha is asked to take the girls to their rooms, and Jeremiah is to bring up the trunks. In another scene Hildegarde brings flowers to a room of convalescent children, some on crutches, and a little child has died close beside her, which leaves her in tears. In a further passage a woman tells Miss Grahame she could persuade a cat out of a bird's-nest and agrees, after hesitating, to go to Bywood.
