About this book
A Christmas Eve celebration at the Children's Home introduces Lydia, a shy girl with yellow curls and a special request for Santa Claus. Around her, the children debate the evening's surprise, enjoy their presents and find ways to make themselves heard. Ethel Calvert Phillips builds this children's novel around an orphan girl's experiences of care and belonging, with the kindly Quaker visitor Friend Morris among the adults who take an interest in her.
Later scenes show Lydia with Mother and Father, recovering from an injured ankle. Dr. Wolfe turns colored candies into a game of courage and good temper, while knitting, puzzles and a daily postcard provide something to look forward to. These small activities give the story its domestic detail and gentle humor. Readers interested in older children's fiction will find a close view of the games, comforts and patient attention that fill Lydia's world.
