About this book

Heat presses on every part of life in Bitter Water Valley, where Jim Deming serves as sheriff of Calor. Nicknamed Duty, he treats his oath of office as an absolute rule. His wife, leaving to join their daughter, blames that severity for their son's prison sentence and the collapse of their family. Deputy Joe Mills listens as she describes the human cost of the sheriff's reputation.

W. C. Tuttle's Western short story carries this quarrel over justice into the desert. Pursuing Red Cowan across the lava beds, Deming becomes feverish and loses his sense of direction. Cowan finds the helpless sheriff and lifts him into the saddle. The harsh landscape and plainspoken dialogue give readers a compact story about the distance between enforcing the law and accepting responsibility for another person.
