Ray Humphreys builds this Western mystery around competing guesses, uncertain evidence and the pressure of a town watching its officers. County commissioners remind Cook that an unsolved case could hurt them all at election time. His renewed search turns up an old wallet containing a newspaper report of a bank robbery. Brisk dialogue and the sheriff's irritated exchanges give the short story a comic edge, while the buried box provides a clear puzzle for readers who enjoy small-town detective work.
