The case begins with a shot outside the Bethel store and a rifle discovered in an abandoned blacksmith shop. As the sheriff reconsiders the physical evidence, small details become urgent matters of life and death. Dialect dialogue, oppressive heat and the crowd's repeated claims of divine intervention give the mystery its particular atmosphere.

Murray Leinster

Murray Leinster was the pen name of William Fitzgerald Jenkins (1896-1975), an American novelist, screenwriter and inventor who wrote mainly science fiction. He wrote short stories and articles in very large numbers and won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette in 1956. His books include "Space Platform" and "Talents, Incorporated".
