About this book
Historic Boys: Their Endeavours, Their Achievements, and Their Times is by E. S. Brooks, with illustrations by R. B. Birch and John Schönberg, and the title page gives London and 1886. The preface says the author has selected the careers of a dozen young fellows of different lands and epochs.
One passage names Marcus Annius Verus, afterward the Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, as a boy prefect who orders a man named Lydus to pay three hundred sestertii for the service of the poor and to wear a wooden collar until the fine is paid. Another describes the villa of his mother, Domitia Lucilla, on the Cœlian Hill in Rome. A third shows Giovanni de Medici riding into Florence as a boy cardinal, with his brother Pietro addressing him as Illustrissimo.
