About this book
Historic Jamaica is by Frank Cundall, F.S.A., secretary and librarian of the Institute of Jamaica, and the title page announces fifty-two illustrations. An epigraph from Montaigne appears on the front pages, and one illustration shows Up-Park Camp in 1840, from a coloured lithograph by Joseph B. Kidd.
Local detail runs throughout. One passage describes a church with memorial windows, a bell rung every evening at nine o'clock, regimental colours and brasses for officers who died of fever. Another says that Manchester parish was separated from neighbouring parishes in 1814 and named after the Duke of Manchester, then Governor, while the town of Mandeville was named after his eldest son. A description of Government House quotes Monk Lewis, writing in 1834.
