About this book

A maze made in seaside sand leads W. H. Matthews to investigate the history of winding paths. His illustrated account, published in 1922, brings together ancient descriptions, archaeological findings and records of garden design. Church floors, British turf mazes and patterns in art all receive attention, alongside the legends associated with labyrinths. The contents also turn to the practical questions of designing a maze and finding a route through it.

The garden chapters examine how a layout can serve different purposes. Matthews contrasts designs meant for a varied promenade with Stephen Switzer's preference for confusing entrances, obstacles and difficult choices. He also describes an elaborate garden at Anhalt whose paths, inscriptions and changing scenes were intended to represent human life. For readers interested in landscape history, puzzles or the meanings attached to familiar patterns, the book connects the shape of a path with the experience its designer hoped to create.
