About this book
The introductory narrator first saw Jerusalem on a summer morning in 1872, with a long grey wall, cypress trees and a single minaret in view. The introductory account describes a city without a railway station or developed northern and southern suburbs, while only a few villas stood outside the gate. The discussion of Bethesda states that the pool has traditionally been pointed out in three separate places.
The historical account describes Metellius, the Roman commander, being forced to treat with Eleazar after a tower of the western fortress was undermined. The account says that the Romans laid down their shields and swords, but some were slain and others compelled to become Jews. Saladin’s dying advice to his son commends care for the people and seeking their hearts, while warning that spilt blood never sleeps.
