Richard Cannon's Historical Record of the Thirty-sixth, the Herefordshire Regiment of Foot, contains an account of the formation of the regiment in 1701 and of its subsequent services to 1852. The appendix lists, among others, a copy of the General Orders issued by the Commander-in-chief of Madras upon the regiment being ordered to return to Great Britain. The record says a powerful armament was prepared in 1703 for the attack of the French and Spanish settlements in the West Indies, but this enterprise was subsequently abandoned.
The record says that after losing several men from the effects of the climate, the regiment was withdrawn from the West Indies and stationed in Ireland in the year 1704. The record says the Thirty-sixth regiment was embarked from Ireland in April 1705 in order to proceed with the force under the Earl of Peterborough. The account of the battle of Salamanca says the evolutions of this great battle are too varied to be clearly described with brevity.
