About this book
William Augustus Steward describes British war medals together with the campaigns they commemorate. The entry for the first Jellalabad medal gives its size as one and a half inches across, with JELLALABAD above a mural crown on the front, the date April VII 1842 on the back, and a ribbon shaded from crimson to yellow and blue. It says 2,596 were issued and names the regiments in the garrison under Sir Robert Sale.
The account of the second Jellalabad medal begins with Lord Ellenborough, Governor-General of India, being dissatisfied with the simple award. Another section follows the Victory as she engages the Bucentaure and then the Redoubtable, and a later heading reads Death of Nelson. A further passage follows Wellington's army to the bridge over the Adour and Marshal Soult's decision to make a stand at Orthez.
