About this book

Shelter before winter is the first concern for Loyalist families arriving on the Saint John River in 1783. Peter Fisher follows these arrivals and the settlements that preceded them, then considers the province's government, towns and sources of income. Published in 1825, his account combines regional history with a practical description of the country. He also explains the limits of his survey, acknowledging the scarcity of written records and the uneven information available about different counties.

Along the Miramichi, abundant pine and busy shipping places raise a harder question about lasting prosperity. Fisher describes timber profits leaving the province, wasteful cutting and the failure to develop farms, roads and towns that might support its inhabitants when the forests run out. For readers interested in settlement and trade, these passages connect everyday conditions with an early argument about local resources and investment. The account preserves the concerns and assumptions of an observer writing while the province was still taking shape.
