About this book
Arthur Young arrives near Dublin in June 1776 and begins recording Ireland through the eyes of a traveller who also farms. His dated entries take in Parliament House, Trinity College, private collections and landscaped estates, with attention to the arrangement of rooms and the shape of the land. Conversations about drainage sit beside impressions of the capital's wealth, raising his concern about whether prosperity reaches the country beyond it.
The account later moves onto the lakes around Killarney, where boats, wooded islands, rocky shores and mountain views give each change of direction a new scene. Young notices details such as a yew growing from a projecting rock and the echo of cannon near the Eagle's Nest. This travel narrative offers both a record of places in the late eighteenth century and a farmer's interest in cultivation, making it useful for readers of Irish landscape, agricultural history and older travel writing.
