Home-made Toy Motors, by Alfred Powell Morgan, is a practical handbook giving detailed instructions for building simple but operative electric motors. The contents list names, among others, Chapter I, which covers how an electric motor operates, some principles of magnetism and the difference between a shunt and a series motor. The contents list also names the Simplex Motor with Three-Pole Armature, how to make the Simplex Overtype Motor and the Manchester Motor, among others.
The instructions say the Shaft is a piece of knitting-needle one and seven-eighths of an inch long. The text says to assemble the three strips on the shaft as shown in Figure 21 and bind them temporarily together with a piece of iron wire. The Commutator Core is formed of a strip of paper, three-eighths of an inch wide and about five inches long, wrapped around the shaft. The text says the armature bearing should be mounted on the frame directly between the two electromagnets.
