About this book

A visitor overwhelmed by New York's enormous railway station turns to his friend Jim with stories of Homeburg, the Illinois town where an afternoon train brings everyone together. George Fitch gives this fictional community a talkative spokesman whose complaints about city life lead into affectionate accounts of local habits. The arrival of the 4:11 train becomes a daily public event, carrying news and familiar faces while residents gather on the platform to watch and exchange observations.

Other chapters take up the town band, telephone exchange, automobiles, school elections and Christmas. The passage about the Homeburg Weekly Democrat shows how a small newspaper makes ordinary lives important: a teacher's sore toe, a baby's arrival and a neighbor's brief trip all deserve attention. Fitch's humor grows from exaggerated comparisons and the close knowledge townspeople have of one another. Readers interested in small town social life will find a portrait built from shared routines, gossip and civic pride.
