About this book

A carefully protected brown skirt and a ride on a cheap London bus introduce Emily Fox-Seton, a woman whose good manners survive a very small income. At thirty-four, she earns money by shopping and finding household help for other people. Her room in Mrs. Cupp's Mortimer Street lodging house offers warmth, bright fabrics and modest comforts that she values after a wet day of errands.

Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1901 novel places everyday economies beside the expectations of the aristocracy. Later, Emily's marriage to Lord Walderhurst brings material ease, along with an intense wish to make him happy. Her sympathy for Hester Osborn opens another view of dependence and companionship. Readers interested in class and women's working lives will find telling details in the clothes, rented rooms and small acts of care that shape Emily's experience.
