About this book
On a shimmering island within sight of the Hebrides, a weary girl brings her boat into the care of the Big Young Hero. She is the Climber, who represents Faith in Isobel Wylie Hutchison's verse drama. Other figures give human shape to Duty, Obedience, Constancy, Love, Hope and Truth, while Finn stands for humanity. Drawing on a Scottish folk tale, the play uses boats, dreams and Highland scenery to explore the search for spiritual certainty.
The dialogue moves between lyrical prayer and plain, sometimes humorous exchanges. In a scene beside a cradle, the Climber receives a vision and learns that she must find the courage to share it with Finn. Love appears as an old woman called the Thief, whose advice brings belief into the realm of action. Readers interested in religious allegory or Scottish literary folklore can follow the play's connection between inward vision and practical responsibility.
