About this book
One Day More, by Joseph Conrad, is a play in one act. The characters include Captain Hagberd, a retired coasting skipper, and Josiah Carvil, formerly a shipbuilder, a widower, and blind. The scene is a small sea port with two yellow brick cottages belonging to Captain Hagberd, one inhabited by himself and the other by the Carvils.
Carvil calls the landlord a lunatic and says the man came here from the North to wait till his missing son turns up, a boy who ran away to sea sixteen years ago. Bessie answers by asking what is so mad in keeping up hope. Harry answers a question about running away by saying that someone wanted to make a blamed lawyer's clerk of him. Defending herself, Bessie asks why she should make the poor old friendless man miserable, and says, "I thought you were far away. I thought you were dead."
