About this book
How the Flag Became Old Glory is by Emma Look Scott, with illustrations by A. C. Valentine. The book tells of Captain William Driver, whose eighteenth year found him master of a vessel and who in thought called the flag Old Glory. In 1831, as master of the brig Charles Daggett, about to set sail for a voyage around the world from Salem, Mass., Captain Driver was presented by the citizens with a large bunting flag.
Verse signed Henry Timrod pictures Old Charleston looking from roof and spire and dome across her tranquil bay. A poem headed Fredericksburg, Dec. 13, 1862, speaks of the increasing moonlight that drifts across my bed. One poem calls for a banner to be furled, saying that the hands that grasped it and the hearts that fondly clasped it are cold and dead, lying low.
