About this book

The Civil War Through the Camera is a book by Henry W. Elson. The title page promises hundreds of photographs actually taken in Civil War times and sixteen reproductions in color of famous war paintings. The contents list names chapters called, among others, The Fight for Richmond, The Shenandoah Valley, Cedar Mountain and Antietam, or Sharpsburg.

The text says the first great battle of the American Civil War brought joy to the Confederacy and grief to the States of the North. The text says the man who planned the battle of Bull Run for the Northern Army was Brigadier-General Irvin McDowell. Under the heading The Gun That Fooled the Federals, the text describes a Quaker gun mounted by the Confederates in the fortifications on the bluff at the river-front before Port Hudson. The text says regular auctions were held in Charleston or Wilmington, where prices for goods not needed by the Confederate Government were run up to fabulous figures.
