About this book
How to Cook Husbands is by Elizabeth Strong Worthington and is dedicated to a dear little girl who will some day, the author hopes, be skilled in matrimonial cookery. The book begins with a newspaper clipping, a recipe from a Baltimore lady, which says husbands are spoiled by mismanagement and lists the ways: blown up, kept in hot water, left to freeze, kept in a stew, roasted or kept in pickle.
The text that follows is written in the first person. In one passage the speaker looks out at the snow and weighs life with a husband against life without one, and quotes the saying that it is far better to have none unless you learn to cook him. The speaker also recalls Charles Reade's recipe, put yourself in his place. Another passage has a father at his desk and a small daughter who objects loudly that he has disturbed her dolls.
