About this book
Four young women turn a casual meeting into a mock club, complete with a president, interruptions and an argument over an article called 'How to Cook Wives.' Their talk moves easily from proposals and broken engagements to opera parties, exhausting social calendars and the pressure to marry well. Elizabeth Strong Worthington builds this comic novel around the sharp remarks and competing views of women whose friendships expose the rules of fashionable society.
The cooking language becomes a running joke about marriage and the treatment of wives. Hilda recounts a packed social calendar, while Evelyn challenges its purpose and Constance appears as an independent figure. Beneath the jokes, the book also considers sympathy and misunderstanding. A later allegory about memory, hope and dread leaves Nannie in tears, yet unable to obtain the comfort she needs from Constance. Readers can find both lively conversation and a more reflective account of the emotional costs behind social expectations.
