About this book
Human Animals, by Frank Hamel, collects instances and examples of the curious belief that certain men and women can transform themselves into animals. The preface says that the causes of transformation are various, among them contact with a wer-animal, touching what he has touched, wearing an animal skin, rubbing the body with ointment, slipping on a girdle and buckling on a strap.
A story tells of a man who was able to change himself into a tiger, but who found it very difficult to resume his normal shape. The text says that some African tribes believe that tailless tigers are transformed men. The text says that in early Christian times the wer-wolf was often regarded as a victim of the evil machinations of a sorcerer. Lucian's story is of a Pythagorian cock which had been a man, a woman, a fish, a horse, and a frog, and Lucian himself was transformed into an ass after anointing himself with enchanted salve from Thessaly.
