About this book
The contents list ten pieces: Wings, Hunger, The Lost 'Beautifulness', The Free Vacation House, The Miracle, Where Lovers Dream, Soap and Water, 'The Fat of the Land', My Own People and How I Found America. The book is by Anzia Yezierska and is dedicated to Mrs. Henry Ollesheimer. The first piece begins with Shenah Pessah at a dismal basement window crying that her heart chokes in her like in a prison.
In that piece Mrs. Melker comes to propose a match with a man named Motkeh, while the girl's uncle objects that he spent fifty dollars on her ticket to America and wants some use from her. Another passage follows a mother waiting with her children in an office, where a lady asks how much she spends on rent and what her husband earns. Another shows a woman writing an essay called 'Believe in Yourself'.
