About this book
Yekl is subtitled A Tale of the New York Ghetto. The contents list names, among others, A paterfamilias, Circumstances alter cases, Mrs. Kavarsky's coup d'état and A housetop idyl. The chapter headed Jake and Yekl begins with the operatives of the cloak-shop in which Jake was employed having been idle all the morning.
The text shows a rabbinical-looking man of thirty sitting with the back of his chair tilted against his sewing machine, intent upon an English newspaper. Jake says that one must not be a greenhorn and that here a Jew is as good as a Gentile. The text shows Gitl, hugging Yosselé with one arm and a bulging parcel with the other, emerging from a side door and screaming out Yekl! in a piteous high key, as if crying for mercy.
