About this book

Christmas morning at Ruan Lanihale brings a storm, an unsteady church band and a young flautist distracted by his coming marriage. Arthur Quiller-Couch opens this collection of winter tales with the noisy social life of a coastal parish in the west country. Young Zeb Minards and Ruby Tresidder have their marriage banns announced just as a man bursts into the church with news of a wreck. The scene mixes village gossip, seasonal customs and physical comedy, giving the musicians almost as much attention as the anxious couple.

Danger enters the title story alongside its humour. In a later passage, Zeb takes a stranger to a secluded hollow near the coast and proposes an exchange of pistol shots. The collection also includes The Haunted Dragoon and A Blue Pantomime. Readers interested in regional speech and English short fiction will find a contrast between familiar parish routines and moments of unease, with dialogue carrying much of the characterisation.
