About this book
Two names on adjoining pages of a Boston hotel register set this romance in motion. Doctor Hiero Glyphic and Balder Helwyse occupy neighboring rooms. Julian Hawthorne's narrator begins by examining the sleeping doctor's room, from his carefully locked door to the violin case beside his bed, before turning toward the secrets of his memory. The opening mixes everyday hotel details with a playful promise of unusual adventures.
A later encounter brings Balder face to face with Gnulemah, whose secluded upbringing reflects his uncle's attempt to recreate an ancient Egyptian world. Her clothing, beliefs and account of a lamp sustaining her life draw Balder into questions about beauty, imagination and human understanding. Published in 1874, the novel offers readers a romance shaped by elaborate descriptions, an intrusive narrator and the tension between ordinary explanations and seemingly enchanted experience.
