About this book

Cairo at sunset opens this desert romance by Joan Conquest (1883-1941), first published in 1922. As the call to prayer rises over the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, Damaris Hethencourt, a red-haired English girl a fortnight short of eighteen, walks the lanes with her bulldog Wellington in search of the market where falcons and hunting cheetahs are sold.

There she first sees Hugh Carden Ali, son of an Arab sheikh and his English wife, schooled at Harrow, where he captained the cricket eleven, yet drawn back to Egypt, his horses and his hawks. Later chapters carry the story up the Nile to Karnak, Assouan and the Valley of the Kings, while an English suitor, Ben Kelham, nurses his wounded hopes and Jane Coop, the devoted maid who reads Ouida and threepenny weeklies, frets over tales of an Arabian chief who follows her young mistress into the desert.

Readers who enjoy the sheikh romances of the 1920s will find the familiar pleasures here: crowded bazaars, falconry, tented camps in the open desert and a heroine caught between two men and two worlds, lightened by the maid's sharp tongue. Its picture of Egypt belongs very much to its own time.
