About this book
Idol's Eye by Carol Emshwiller appeared in Future Science Fiction in February 1958. Philippa sits on the back steps shelling peas when she hears footsteps she knows. She wears thick, ill-fitting glasses, yet the barn, the hills and the people around her are blurred shapes. She shakes her fine black hair farther over her eyes as a protective screen. The man who comes says, You're looking pretty, and she hears mockery in it.
She is told that he is her only chance and that men like a girl who notices. Philippa tries to be noticing and kind, and on the porch he grows bold. Elsewhere in the story someone has been sent out in one of six new ships built to leave the solar system, and creatures of a strange world plant an orchard and build a holy gate.
