About this book

The account describes a dark star bringing eternal night and turning history into something regarded as incredible myth within a single generation. The narrator goes out at Pa's request to collect an extra pail of air, losing warmth from the fingers while filling it. The narrator discovers that an apparent young lady is actually a tiny light moving stealthily from window to window in the opposite apartment.

The Nest has room for four people and their things, with thick woolly rugs covering the floor and blankets forming three sides. Pa hangs blankets and rugs around the Nest to slow the escape of air, and faces the last blankets with aluminum foil to retain heat. The narrator says that the Nest might become a survival school, although what will happen has not yet been decided.
