About this book
A fashionable holiday in the Tyrol brings Julius Hahn and his son Fritz onto a mountain road where comfort and scenery compete for their attention. Julius owns a successful Berlin concert garden and measures much of life through money, rank and public recognition. His complaints about the ride, set against glowing Alpine meadows and a noisy mountain stream, give the opening story its mixture of landscape description and social comedy.
Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen gathers six short stories in this collection, including Annunciata, Under the Glacier and How Mr. Storm Met His Destiny. Elsewhere, a fjord, an unsettled glacier and a young woman's trust in a misunderstood man create a more anxious atmosphere. The excerpts offer sharply observed social ambition alongside personal loyalties and threatening natural surroundings, making the volume a useful choice for readers interested in how setting shapes a story's emotional pressure.
