About this book
Kings, coastal trade and the changing life of Norway give Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen's history its range. Writing in 1886, Boyesen explains that he gives special attention to dramatic events and memorable rulers, drawing on Norse sagas and later historical studies. The contents move from early tribal life and the old Scandinavian gods to Viking expeditions, royal rivalries and the spread of Christianity. His account gives substantial space to Olaf Tryggvesson, while treating the long union with Denmark more briefly.
The discussion of Olaf the Quiet turns toward commerce, towns and efforts to release people from bondage. Boyesen considers how stronger coastal defenses and more orderly government affected raiding, and how merchants and warriors could share the same occupations. Readers interested in Norway's past can follow both the succession of rulers and an older historian's choices about which events deserve the fullest telling.
