About this book
The study concerns illuminated manuscripts, their art and technique, and the contents list classical writing methods, metal plates, rolls, gold amulets, and waxed tablets. The list of illustrations includes a drawing engraved on a bronze cista and a miniature of classical design from a twelfth century Psalter. The bibliography describes photographic reproductions of important manuscripts from different countries and periods.
The discussion of miniature art argues that illuminators working mainly for money could not rival earlier monastic scribes. The account describes earlier monastic scribes as able to spend years illuminating a book without hurry, finding their chief joy and relaxation in their work. The critique finds occasional signs of weariness and haste in most of even the best work of fifteenth century guild-scribes.
