About this book
A History of Caricature and Grotesque in Literature and Art is by Thomas Wright, M.A., F.S.A., with illustrations drawn and engraved by F. W. Fairholt. An illustration shows Aristotle and Pythaïs from a fifteenth-century engraving by Burgmair, and the transcriber's note says the illustrations were placed approximately where they appeared in the original.
One passage on Greek comedy discusses Aristophanes and his comedy The Babylonians of 426, and Anaximandrides, who was prosecuted for changing a line of Euripides, and the Middle and New Comedy, with names such as Epicharmus and Menander. Another passage describes how farces were detached from the mysteries and miracle-plays and came to be called interludes in England, performed at court festivals, in noble households, and in universities, great schools and inns of court.
