About this book
The story In a Winter City presents Floralia as a once famous city on a historical river, adorned by the arts and home to great men. Lord Clairvaux doubts that Hilda is happy and describes her spending half her life thinking about how to dress, while admitting that he has never understood her.
The Duc argues that a woman with a past is easier to manage, and that being a woman's first object of passion is flattering but troublesome. Della Rocca replies that he has seldom cared to be anything unless he is the first object of passion. A discussion of majolica weighs fine metallic lustre against forms described as often clumsy, while a painted panel prompts questions about charm despite its workmanship.
