About this book
London fog turns an ordinary walk to a medical appointment into an ordeal for McTaggart. Already anxious about his symptoms, he arrives in Harley Street and finds an unexpected source of reassurance: a specialist tending his flowers and telling an amusing story. Muriel Hine begins her novel with a close view of a nervous man's thoughts, setting his private fears against the noise, discomfort and small absurdities of city life.
Elsewhere, Stephen Somerfield faces mounting bills and the collapse of the comfortable arrangements on which he has depended. His work for a women's suffrage organization brings him into Mrs. Uniacke's circle, where personal charm and financial calculation become closely linked. The novel offers readers scenes of social dependence and self-interest, with particular attention to the excuses people make and the impressions they try to create.
