About this book
Hunger and unemployment give William Booth's proposals for social reform their immediate purpose. Published in 1890, this book sets out his response to poverty in Britain through the work of the Salvation Army. Booth recalls the hardship of textile workers in his childhood and connects that memory with his later efforts to provide food, clothing, homes and work. His argument joins practical assistance to Christian renewal, treating changes in people's surroundings and personal lives as parts of the same undertaking.
The account becomes more concrete when Booth describes women living and working in poor urban neighbourhoods. Their small rooms serve as bases for visiting the sick and caring for children, placing relief workers close to those they assist. Readers interested in organised charity can examine both the everyday tasks and the religious convictions behind this programme. The book also offers material for studying how a reformer explained poverty and proposed a coordinated response.
