About this book
The Social Work of the Salvation Army is by Edwin Gifford Lamb and is "Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Political Science Columbia University". The preface says the word "Social" in the title suggests that the writer is "not attempting to describe the religious features of the organization," save in an auxiliary way.
The preface quotes Commander Booth-Tucker, "the leader of the Army in the United States from 1896 to 1904", as saying that "The Salvation Army is the evolution of two great ideas". A statement the book quotes gives "an annual income of nearly $2,000,000.00" for operations in the United States and real estate holdings valued at "about $1,500,000". The author writes that "the Army tends to forsake its field of the lower class for the field of the working class for financial reasons," and adds that if it can run a hotel for working men "willing to pay $1.50 upwards per week", "they may do better financially than with a dormitory whose beds are held at ten cents." The text says the Army "is held together by both the man and the idea."
