About this book
Helen Campbell examines the lives of working women through studies drawn from fifteen months of observation abroad. Published in 1889, this account asks why long hours and steady effort can still leave workers unable to meet basic needs. Her opening chapter weighs wages, competition, machinery and employers' responsibility, while arguing that figures alone cannot explain the human cost of the labor system.
The chapters cover London shirt makers, dressmakers, milliners, shop assistants and women earning money in street trades, before turning to workers in France and Italy. A passage on Covent Garden follows the immense flow of food into London and the many lives bound up with supplying the city. Campbell combines close observation with an appeal for social change. Readers interested in women's employment and the history of poverty will find both descriptions of daily work and a forceful argument about the obligations of society.
