Incidents of Travel in Greece, Turkey, Russia, and Poland, Volume 1 is the first volume of the 1838 travel book by John Lloyd Stephens (1805-1852), the American lawyer, traveller, and pioneer of Central American archaeology who was the leading figure in the rediscovery of the Maya cities of Yucatán and Honduras. Stephens travelled through the eastern Mediterranean and into Russia in the mid-1830s and published two best-selling travel books, this one and Incidents of Travel in Egypt, Arabia Petraea, and the Holy Land, that established him as the leading American travel writer of his generation. Volume 1 covers his journey through Greece in the years just after the War of Independence, his time in Constantinople, and his entry into Russia through Odessa. He later turned to Maya archaeology with the artist Frederick Catherwood. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
