About this book

A tutor hoping to awaken his pupil's interest in life makes a detour into the Jura Mountains. John Hendricks has spent nine months travelling with Lord Ernie, a young aristocrat whose fondness for watching fires stands out among his faint enthusiasms. The village Hendricks chooses carries personal memories for him, along with troubling accounts of the surrounding heights. This opening brings education, disappointed ambition and mountain superstition together in Algernon Blackwood's 1914 collection of five supernatural stories.

Elsewhere, an awkward encounter with a housekeeper takes on an unsettling significance. A narrator links her movements through a country house with the lingering influence of her former employer and his sombre religious teaching. Small social exchanges, silence and uncertain impressions supply the tension.
