About this book

Three retired brothers share The Glen Tower, a remote house in the hills of South Wales, when a lively young guest unsettles their quiet household. Griffith, the youngest, introduces his brothers through the work that shaped them: Owen served a London parish, while Morgan practised medicine. Griffith's own account moves from literary ambitions to a legal career, marriage and bereavement. These personal histories give the opening its mixture of affectionate humour and grief.

Wilkie Collins builds a collection of stories within this family setting, arranging the tales across ten days and assigning them to the different brothers. Family secrets, troubled dreams and mysteries appear among the contents. In one tense passage, a man at an inn struggles with his fear of a body concealed behind bed curtains as his candle burns low. The book offers readers both the companionship of its narrating household and close attention to the way imagination turns an ordinary room into a source of dread.
