About this book

A Christmas conversation beside a drawing-room fire prompts Lady Farquhar to recall an unsettling experience from her youth. She begins with a family stay near a quiet village on Ireland's south coast, where they have rented a seaside house for rest and better health. Her care over the telling matters as much as the setting: she worries that repeated recollection can blur details, and asks her listener to trust her judgment as well as her honesty.

Mrs. Molesworth brings together four short ghost tales, using conversation, personal recollection and ordinary surroundings to frame strange experiences. Another passage follows a weary walking party through a forest toward Silberbach, where finding their inn becomes a comic ordeal of scattered houses, steep paths and obstructing hay. Readers who enjoy quieter supernatural fiction will find an emphasis on the people telling these accounts and the familiar settings in which unease takes hold.
