About this book

Richard Appignanesi introduces Freud through his medical training, scientific interests and the social atmosphere of Vienna. The account follows his work on nerve cells, his move into clinical medicine and the influence of teachers and colleagues on his thinking. It places the development of his ideas alongside questions about how the nervous system relates to the mind.

Richard Appignanesi

Introducing Freud began life in 1979 as Freud for Beginners, a paperback that explained psychoanalysis in comic-strip panels at a time when almost nothing else did. Richard Appignanesi wrote the text and Oscar Zarate drew it, and the two names belong together on it.
